对称和等量均衡都存在相对明确的中心轴线，而异量均衡则是一种动态的或不固定的均势状态，也就是在家具形式构成中并不是相对于中心或中线的平衡，形状、大小及位置各异甚至截然不同，在空间构图上作不规则的配置，数量、体量和类型都存在差异，而且在整体形式上也可以是高低、大小或数量各异的，但是整体在知觉上却要形成气势上的平衡，这与中国画中的均衡构图、园林建筑中的“掇山”和“叠石”的气势均衡类似，强化虚空间的量感以及形成的重力场，从而影响人们知觉上的均势感。在现代中式家具中采用异量均衡的形式，不仅能够满足人们生活中各种不同的使用需求，如在壁架、隔板的高低调节和数量上的设置等，而且能够使家具造型给人玲珑、活泼和多变的感觉（如图5-56）。
